Best Restaurants in Trastevere: Where Locals Actually Eat
Trastevere is Rome's most beloved neighbourhood for authentic Roman cuisine. Here's our insider guide to the best restaurants, trattorias and osterias where locals eat.
Trastevere is Rome's most beloved neighbourhood for authentic Roman cuisine. Its working-class origins gave rise to a robust, generous style of cooking — large portions, strong flavours, seasonal ingredients and an absolute commitment to tradition.
WHY TRASTEVERE FOR FOOD? Trastevere has been a food destination for centuries. The neighbourhood's character — a mix of long-established Roman families, artists, students and a growing international community — creates a food scene that is simultaneously traditional and lively.
THE CLASSICS: WHAT TO ORDER Cacio e Pepe — Trastevere's trattorias do this better than almost anywhere else in Rome. Look for restaurants that make their own pasta fresh daily. The best versions have a silky, creamy sauce that coats every strand of pasta without a single clump of cheese.
Coda alla Vaccinara — oxtail braised for hours with tomatoes, celery, pine nuts and raisins. A dish that requires patience to make and rewards patience to eat. The sauce is rich, complex and deeply satisfying.
Carciofi alla Romana — braised artichokes with garlic, mint and olive oil. Available from late winter through spring when Roman artichokes are in season.
Abbacchio alla Romana — milk-fed lamb roasted with rosemary, garlic and white wine. A Roman Easter tradition available year-round in the best trattorias.
Tiramisu — order it if it is made in-house; avoid it if it comes pre-packaged.
WHERE TO EAT: THE INSIDER GUIDE The golden rule: avoid the restaurants immediately around Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere. They tend to be overpriced and tourist-oriented. Walk two or three streets away and the quality improves dramatically while the prices drop.
Look for restaurants with handwritten or chalkboard menus that change daily based on what is fresh. No photographs of food on the menu. A mix of locals and tourists at the tables. Restaurants that are full by 8:30 PM.
Some of the best streets for eating in Trastevere are Via della Lungaretta, Via dei Genovesi, Via della Scala and the small streets around Piazza Piscinula. These are where the neighbourhood trattorias that have been feeding Romans for generations are found.
WHERE TO DRINK Trastevere's wine bar scene is excellent. The neighbourhood has a concentration of enoteche serving natural and traditional Italian wines by the glass, alongside excellent charcuterie and cheese boards.
The aperitivo hour from 6 to 8 PM is particularly good — many bars offer free snacks with drinks during this period. After dinner, the bars around Piazza Trilussa are the centre of Trastevere's nightlife — lively but not rowdy, with a good mix of locals and visitors.
GETTING THERE AND PRACTICAL TIPS Trastevere is a 20-minute walk from the historic centre, or a short tram ride on tram 8 from Largo di Torre Argentina. The neighbourhood is best explored on foot.
Book ahead for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings — the best restaurants fill up fast. Lunch is often better value than dinner — many trattorias offer a fixed lunch menu at a fraction of the evening price. The neighbourhood is at its best in the evening, when the restaurants fill up and the streets come alive. Arrive around 7:30 to 8:00 PM for dinner and plan to stay late.
